Pin Cushion

A length of antique satin, snipped from the bolt, is fastened in slithering folds around fiberglass-pins gliding easily into visions of my genius.

Fake flesh, pricked.

“OUCH!”

This mannequin is much too realistic.

Ah, apparel design classes.  Those poor mannequins suffered many brutish attempts on my part to make lengths of fabric do my bidding.  I hope mannequins have forgiving natures.

The weekend challenge This weekend we want you to give us 33 words (exactly) that include among them at least one example of onomatopoeia.  When looking for a good page to link to in order to help describe the device, we stumbled upon our very own Apoplectic Apostrophes' post on literary devices.  Check it out if you need help remembering how onomatopoeia work.

  2. I've worked with satin, and it does slither! It's like working with a living thing, I swear. Hope that mannequin didn't bleed all over the fabric!

    1. Nenna-I always hated sewing with slippery fabric-it's exactly like a living thing. One that I never was able to tame;) Hopefully there were some mannequin band-aids on hand:)

  3. I loved this, but to my embarrassment, I had to look up "onomatopoeia." I had no clue what it meant. I like slithering. It rolls off my tongue.

Your humor also delighted me. It's nice to read a post that makes me smile.

    Have a great weekend:~)

  12. I smiled through this whole piece. Love the lightness feel and the darkness of slither and fake flesh. Made me rethink whether we were really talking about a mannequin.

  13. Thanks Gina! I think the line between mannequin, and us, is very thin sometimes...

  23. Love this Valerie! I love the slithering too. Great use of onomatopoeia — and what a great piece! I think I'd jump out of my skin if a mannequin yelled like that!

  24. The slithering folds brought it to life just enough for the yelp. Made me laugh imagining a story as mannequin - being pricked by an overly zealous writer... Great piece, Valerie!
