The Right One

Part of the finishing touch I give to every bag I sew is the addition of a vintage button.  I am extremely picky about this.  For me, it’s such an important detail, that I’ve even delayed finishing a bag when I can’t find just the right button that works.  Great barkcloth and high quality workmanship are always a given.  It’s finding the right button that is the unknown element.  The deal maker, or breaker, so to speak.

I was so excited to come across the collection of buttons above.  They are all winners, and they will all inspire me at some point in the future.  I love the big and bold ones.  I love the small, playful ones.  In short-I love a great vintage button.

This black button has to be the most enormous button I’ve ever come across. ( I’m wondering if I’ll need a building permit when I decide to use it some day!)

My question for you is-what part of your craft has to be just right?  Is there one detail in what you do, that if you can’t get it just right you are not satisfied?  This is a unusual question I know-but I’d love to know your thoughts!

  1. There are so many details that go into crafting a story, from the initial outline to the final revision, so it's hard to pick a favorite. So I'll talk about blog writing instead. For me, the favorite detail is taking just the right photograph that parallels in some way an aspect I can bring to a post, some angle about living our choice lives. I love looking through the lens and finding that picture from everyday life that says we can do it.

  4. That button is HUGE! What fun finds your buttons all are - I love them!

I'm afraid I'm not much of a detail oriented crafter - which is why my stuff turns out lopsided and whatnot, lol.

  6. Wow, I love all of those buttons. I think it's wonderful the work you put into your gorgeous bags. It must be like treasure hunting when you go to thrift stores and garage sales.

I think for me editing a piece of writing until it feels right is my thing. I rarely hit publish until I feel that I did my best. I think that's why blogging is such a nerve-wracking effort. It's like a small birth every time and when people don't respond the way you thought they might, it can get depressing. But once I've written the next post, I forget the ratings of the one before. Great post my friend!

  7. Thanks Kim-I never thought about my search being like a treasure hunt, but that's exactly what it's like! There is always the thrill over what I might find.

And for the record-I love your writing. It is always so heartfelt and that, to me is what makes me relate to, and want to read every piece you write. It's wonderful stuff, my friend!

  8. The way you described choosing the right button sounds very much like when I have to frame one of my paintings. The frame has to be just as correct as the actual painting itself. It can make it or break it!!

  9. Good point Lisa! I've seen works of art in the past ruined by an improper frame! From what I've seen, you do an excellent job in choosing the frames for your work!
