Seven Day Forecast

tuesday

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child must work for a living,
But the child that's born on the Sabbath day,
Is fair and wise and good and gay.

I’ve known about this little poem since I was a child, but what I didn’t know was that since the late 1500’s, the day of the week that a person is born on has been used as a way to tell that person’s fortune.

I was born on a Tuesday.  Let’s see if my fortune is true.

Social grace?  I think I’m pretty well behaved around other people.

Spiritual grace?    (See that halo over my head?)

Physical grace?  At times-not so much. I’m usually the one who trips over the uneven places on sidewalks, or spills large quantities of liquid, or breaks something of value.

I guess two out of three isn’t so bad.

How about you?  On which day of the week were you born, and is your fortune true?

  1. I don't even know what day of the week I was born on! Pierce was born on a Tuesday and the twins were born on a Saturday. Fun poem, Valerie!

  2. Oh, Valerie, I knew you must have been born on Tuesday...yes, you are full of grace!

I was born on a Wednesday, apparently...er...something must be wrong there...:-D I am definitely the opposite, I hope!

  3. I was born on a Sunday - Father's Day, to be exact! Hmm...I think I'm pretty fair, I hope I'm wise, and I'm happy most of the time (as long as I have chocolate!).

  4. Thanks Lisa! Next time you talk to your mom, ask her, and let me know:)

Dawn, thanks! And oh woe is me, you are not woeful! Just the opposite I think:)

Melissa-you are all of those things-even without our beloved chocolate;)

  5. Sunday child .. however my poor momma was in labor with me for 48 hours and they finally pulled me out with forceps before either of us died .. should I have been a Wednesday??

Both my kids were c-section & I got to choose the day.. I chose Monday so we could have the weekend .. does that count? :o)

amazed that the poem was from 1500s - how fun........ ♦

  6. I'm a Wednesday's Child, full of woe.

I've known this poem since my childhood, too. In fact, I had a framed print of Wednesday's Child in my room, which is funny to me, since I'm generally not woeful at all.

Or maybe I refuse to be in spite of my fortune? Who knows.

Felix is a Thursday's child, with far to go, and I choose to interpret that to mean he will go far!

  7. Lisa-the story of your birth makes Sunday a very meaningful day, and I think it fits you too. Like Dawn, you are so not full of woe!

And picking Monday for the birth of your own kids sure does count. Pretty smart if you ask me.

I didn't realize the poem was that old either!

Cam-You, like Dawn and Lisa above don't strike me as woeful-though as a writer, it's certainly a bit of artistic license you could take;)
I like your take on Felix's day of birth-that he will go far! My daughter Amy is also a Tuesday, and a person more beautifully full of grace I have yet had the privilege to meet:)

  8. Because I was adopted and there were rigid laws about what years you could be born in order to leave Bangladesh, I'm not sure when exactly I was born. It would be kind of neat to know a thing like that though.
