The Tale of the Missing Tire

car no wheels

For those few days that Blogger was not working, I despaired over all the great blog post ideas I had, but couldn’t post.

And now-my mind is a blank page.  I am at a loss as to what to write-my great ideas washed away with the rain that fell last weekend.

And so I am giving you a cute Amy story…

The summer  before Amy turned 5, we flew from Seattle to Baltimore.  On the way to the Seattle airport, Amy pointed out a broken down car on the side of the road.  It was missing a wheel.  “That’s too bad,”  we responded.  “That car won’t be going anywhere, will it?”

Hours, and nearly 3000 miles later, as we were driving away from the Baltimore airport on our way to my in-laws house,  Amy became very excited.  “Look!”  she shouted.  “I see the missing wheel from that car!”  And sure enough-there was a wheel on the side of the road.

We laughed quietly to ourselves, but we didn't have the heart to tell Amy that she was mistaken-and that the wheel on the side of the road in Baltimore couldn’t possibly belong to the car on the side of the road in Seattle.  She was just too happy with herself and her discovery.

Oh to have the mind of a child, chock full of  imagination, creativity, and belief that anything is possible.

I’d never be short on blog post ideas again!

  1. Great story!

Stuck on sloth huh? Since you were writing of cars (and tires) how about a story of a lady who needs to get somewhere very badly, but whose car is sluggish and dying and she doesn't think she'll make it. I know you could put all the juicy bits of her purpose and her mission in there as well ;-)

If you ever want to exchange emails to go back and forth about story ideas when stuck or needing feedback you can catch me at varunner7 @ aol dot com. My first TRDC writing partner didn't work out because she was too busy.

Also, have you ever seen the film The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio? It's based on a true story, and I think you'd like it.

  2. Awww, that is so cute! The imagination of a child is unparalleled. I remember when my daughter was about 5 and it was cloudy out. We were driving home and she said, "Mom, it's really cloudy." I said, "Yes, it is." And she responded, "But the sun can't breathe!" Never, never forget that one!!!

  3. We have those types of conversations around here all the time - as you can imagine:)

I was going through what you did for awhile - great ideas till I got to the blog. I started recently writing in a post idea file on my hard drive. I just jot down ideas as they come. And then later when I'm ready to post something, I look at what I've got. I'm always surprised.

Yesterday when I picked Deaglan up from daycare (he goes once a week while I'm on mat leave) I told him that he could have the ice cream cone I'd promised him when we got home. He said: But mommy, first I'm going to need some hugs and kisses from you." Seriously, how could it get any better than that??

  4. Doesn't everyday life give us the best inspiration for stories, and blog posts? And to see life through the eyes of a child, what a fun perspective to bring to the page!

  5. Lisa-Thanks for the idea! I have the "bones" of a story written down now and I will work on finishing it today. I loved that movie-and as I sit here writing I can see the book too. I am not a huge Woody Harrelson fan, but I thought he was outstanding in that movie! And yes-I'll be emailing you! It would be fun to exchange ideas:)

Melissa-cute story! All of us should pool our cute kid stories and write a book lol! I think the funniest thing about what kids say sometimes is that they aren't trying to be funny:)

Kim-excellent idea. I need to do that too, because I was so frustrated when I couldn't think of anything to write. Deaglan is such a cutie! It doesn't get any better than that:)

Joanne-I agree-everyday life is the best inspiration. When the basement flooded I kept thinking-blog post! I need to start carrying my camera with me at all times too:)

  6. I really love all the pictures on your blog! So vintage! :)
