Day 1

Alaska map

This morning, my dear husband and daughter left on their much planned and anticipated 10 day trip to Juneau, Alaska.  They have a lot of fun and interesting activities planned, including a whale watching trip, glacier hike, salmon bake and zip line ride.

I thought that in an attempt to keep myself from moping around too much while they are gone, I’d try to do some fun and productive projects on my own, and have my goal be to find at least one interesting item to blog about every day.

On the home front today, our strawberries are just about ripe!  By this evening, there should be a few ready for sweet munching.  And Amy helped me get spaghetti sauce going in the crock pot before it was time to go.  My secret ingredient is to add about a quarter cup of  balsamic vinegar.  It really enhances the flavor the the tomato sauce.  What’s your secret ingredient?

  1. I once made the most wonderful spaghetti sauce in the crockpot - the secret ingredient was italian sausage.

  3. Ooh! I never thought about adding balsamic vinegar...

I have lovely memories of picking strawberries with my grandmother on her farm. We'd take them into her kitchen, wash them up, slice them, and sprinkle sugar on them. The perfect summer treat!

  4. Depending on the tomatoes, if they're not sweet enough, I'll add a little sugar to the sauce. I like the sound of the balsamic vinegar and will definitely have to try it.

The Alaska trip sounds fun too ... Have you ever been?

  5. Melissa-I remember my grandma serving strawberries when I was a kid-sliced and sugared. They were so good! (And delicious on the home made ice cream my uncles used to make!)

Joanne-great idea! Sometimes tomatoes do need a little help:) I've been to Ketchikan and Anchorage, but this time I decided to stay home and take care of the garden and the pets:) It was hard not to go though because Alaska is so gorgeous-but I think Stuart and Amy will enjoy their father/daughter trip together:)

  7. Hi Suzie! Aren't strawberries yummy! I was out working in my garden and I thought of you-I could smell my oregano as I pulled weeds-heavenly! And garlic is essential in a good sauce:) Glad to see your comment:) xx

  8. Oh what a great trip they are on! I can't wait to see some of Amy's pictures. We always put cream of mushroom sauce into our bolognese. And lots and lots of fresh herbs.
